Winthrop, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College men' s basketball team received nine of 11 first-place votes to land atop the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) preseason poll. The poll, which is voted on by the league's 11 head coaches, was released on Monday afternoon.
The Falcons received nine first-place votes to earn 118 total points and finished 15 points ahead of second-place Johnson & Wales. The Wildcats received a first place vote in the poll and Mount Ida landed in third with the final first-place vote and 91 points.
Rounding out the top-five were Saint Joseph's of Maine with 83 points and Lasell with 79 points. Number six through 11 in the poll were Regis (Mass.) (62 points), Emmanuel (Mass.) (57 points), Norwich (50 points), Suffolk (44 points), Anna Maria (23 points) and Rivier (16 points).
Albertus Magnus opens the 2017-18 campaign on Saturday, November 18, at 6 p.m. with a road non-conference clash versus Swarthmore. The contest will mark the first-ever meeting between the Falcons and the Garnets.
Founded in 1995, the GNAC is an NCAA Division III association made up of 13 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes across the New England region. Each year, the GNAC sponsors and administers 20 championships, while balancing academic integrity, athletic opportunities and community involvement.
