Falcons Drop A Pair of Non-Conference Games vs. Lycoming and Franciscan

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Alberus Magnus College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games on Tuesday afternoon against Lycoming and Franciscan at NMB Park in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Warriors took down the Falcons, 10-2, in six innings before falling to the Barones, 10-6, to end the day.


GAME 1 SCORE: Lycoming 10 | Albertus Magnus 2
TEAM RECORDS: Albertus Magnus (1-2) | Lycoming (3-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

(B) 1st Inning – Lycoming started off the game hot, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to take the early 3-0 advantage.

(T) 2nd Inning – With two outs, Kristen Cunning (Hoboken, N.J.) singled on a hard ground ball to left field on a 1-2 count, allowing Maxine Sanchez (Corona, N.Y.) to score, cutting Lycoming's lead to two, 3-1. With runners remaining on second and first, the Falcons' threat ended with a ground out to the pitcher.

(T) 3rd Inning – Albertus Magnus added another run in the top of the third, to bring the score to within one, 3-2. Amanda Jessey (East Haven, Conn.) started off the inning with a hit to center field before Laura Anderson doubled to center to allow Jessey to score. However, the Falcons rally was cut short after ending the inning with three straight outs.

(B) 3rd Inning – Lycoming answered back to the Falcons' threat scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to three, 5-2.

(B) 4th Inning – With two outs, Lycoming scored three straight runs on back-to-back errors and a single to left field to push its lead to six, 8-2. 

(B) 6th Inning – Lycoming added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away, 10-2.

A LOOK INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Shyleen Ortiz (New Britain, Conn.) picked up the loss for the Falcons after allowing three runs on two hits. She also recorded two walks and a strikeout.
  • Megan Ferraro (Branford, Conn.) and Shayla Gladden (Springfield, Mass.) also made appearances on the mound for the Falcons.
  • Rachael Shady earned her second win of the season after allowing two runs, six hits and struck out two batters over five innings on the mound.

GAME 2 SCORE: Franciscan 10 | Albertus Magnus 6

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 1st Inning – Franciscan struck first scoring two quick runs in the top of the first to take the early 2-0 lead. 

(B) 1st Inning – Albertus Magnus answered back in the bottom of the first scoring three runs to take its first lead of the day, 3-2. With one out and a runner on third, Lauren Anderson singled to left field, allowing Aliza Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) to score, before Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.) brought home Anderson on a RBI triple to right. Now with two outs, Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) managed to score the final run of inning after she singled to center field, allowing Wedher to cross home.

(T) 3rd Inning – The Barones recorded an impressive fifth inning as the team rallied for five funs and took over the lead, 7-3, heading into the bottom half of the inning.

(B) 3rd Inning – With no outs and a runners on the corners, Morgan Shura sent her teammate on third home to cut the Barones lead to three, 7-4. However, the the Falcons' threat ended with three quick outs.

(B) 4th Inning – Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) brought the Falcons to within two, 7-5, after she began the inning with a single to short before a sacrifice fly by Anderson brought home Whitfield.

(T) 6th Inning – However, with bases loaded and two outs, Franciscan was able to clear the bases after a runner scored on error by the Falcons' catcher and a two-run RBI single to right.

(B) 7th Inning – The Falcons final threat of the game came in the bottom of the seventh as Castillo scored on a sacrifice fly by Shura before the Barones captured the final two outs of the game.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Thursday, March 16 against Bay Path and Gettysburg. Game times are set for 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
