On a day where Kelsey Proctor (Guilford, Conn.) and Erika Blechert (Durham, Conn.) were recognized for senior day, the women's lacrosse team defeated the Anna Maria College AMCats 19-10 for the program's first victory Sunday afternoon at Celentano Field in New Haven, Conn. Erika Blechert did not play due to an injury but has been amazing in goals for the entire season. Proctor, had a career game scoring four goals and recording three assists for a total of seven points on the day. The Falcons improve to 1-9 overall and 1-8 in the GNAC while the AMCats fall to 0-11 overall and 0-8 in the GNAC.
The scoring started with the senior Proctor as she scored the first goal of the game with 26:52 left in the first half. Two minutes later, Ashley Guerrera (Watertown, Conn.) scored on a pass from Fekianne Charles (Bridgeport, Conn.) to bring the Falcons up 2-0.
With 19:55 left in the half, Becky Slivinsky (Plainville, Conn.) scored her first career goal for the season on a great pass from Guerrera.
The AMCats responded just minutes later with a goal from sophomore midfielder Emily Adriaansen. Adriaansen scored four goals on the day on just five shots.
The Falcons went on a 6-0 scoring run powered by Guerrera who had an impressive seven goals on the day. Guerrera was yet to score a goal on the season previous to Sunday's matchup. Guerrera ended the game with seven goals and one assist for a game-high eight points.
Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.) received her first start for the women's lacrosse team of the year and played stellar. Case had 14 saves on 24 shots and picked up two ground balls. Meghan Loughman (Trumbull Conn.) led the game in ground balls with nine.
At the half, the Falcons led by the score of 10-4. The Falcons just edged out the AMCats 8-7 on draw control and outshot Anna Maria 24-13.
Anna Maria would not go away easy however as they went on a 4-2 scoring run led by Brittany Jackson. Jackson had four goals on the day and picked up six ground balls. The Falcons offense was much too powerful however as the attack from Proctor, Guerrera, and Miranda Jassil (North Branford, Conn.) proved to be too much. The trio combined for 16 of the Falcons 19 goals on the day.
The final scored ended 19-10 in favor of the Falcons. The 19 goals scored was a program record for women's lacrosse as they scored just 10 goals in their previous eight matches. The Falcons defeated the AMCats in ground balls 39-25 as well as shots, 45-30.
The Falcons will take on Bay Path Thursday afternoon at 3:00 PM at Celentano Field in New Haven, Conn. for their last home game of the season.
