Arent Strikes Out 10 In Win Over MSMC As Softball Opens Season With Doubleheader Split In Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed just one hit in a 3-1 win over Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) to open the season for the Albertus Magnus College softball team. The Falcons split the opening day of action, falling to Carthage in the second game, 12-2.

Arent struck out six batters over the first three innings and didn't allow a hit until there were two outs in the fourth.

Mikaela Schwippert (Whippany, N.J.) drove in three runs over the two games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Arent started off strong in the first inning, striking out two of the first three batters. She would strike out two in the second inning and one more in the third, allowing just one baserunner during that time.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Knights were able to manufacture a run as Chloe Graham drew a walk and eventually came around to score after an RBI single by Madison White. It would be the lone hit and run allowed by Arent.
  • Grace MacDonald, who started on the mound for the Knights had an effective outing over the first five innings of her outing, allowing just one hit and striking out seven.
  • The Albertus bats woke up in the top of the sixth as Gabby Rubino (Southington, Conn.) opened up the inning with a walk to start the rally. Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) then reached base after reaching on an error. With runners on second and third, Arent helped her own cause with a bunt to the pitcher that scored Jazmyn Browne (Bristol, Conn.), who pinch ran for Rubino.
  • Schwippert then followed with her first hit with an RBI single that scored Smith, putting the Falcons up, 2-1.
  • Arent retired the batters in order in the bottom of the sixth.
  • In the top of the seventh, Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) and Izzy Barreiro (Brookfield, Conn.) each singled. With runners on second and third, Smith drove in Edwards with an RBI single, scoring Edwards to give Albertus a 3-1 lead.
  • Arent retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Carthage erupted for six runs in the top of the first as Olivia Hristov, Gwen Hendrick, Tallulah Finegold and Hana Adler each had RBI singles. 
  • Albertus got one back in the bottom of the inning as Schwippert drove in Arent with an RBI single after Arent drew a two-out walk.
  • Carthage added four more in the top of the third, highlighted by RBI singles by both Adler and Finegold.
  • Schwippert added an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third.
  • Carthage scored one more run in both the fourth and fifth innings.
