Edwards Drives In Three In Win Over Thomas As Softball Splits Final Day Of The Spring Games

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team closed out The Spring Games with a split on Friday. The Falcons dropped its first game to Earlham College, 14-3 before closing out their trip with a 4-2 win over Thomas College of Maine.

Gabby Rubino (Southington, Conn.) registered three doubles over the course of the two games and Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) drove in three runs and scored one in the win over Thomas whie going 2-for-4.

Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) earned the win over Thomas pitching six innings and striking out six.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Earlham had its first five batters reach base in the top of the first inning as it took a 4-0 lead in the top of the inning.
  • The Falcons cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the inning as Rubino and Arent hit back-to-back doubles to plate the first run and Mikaela Scwhippert (Whippany, N.J.) followed with an RBI single to make it a 4-2 game.
  • Earlham added a run in the top of the third and blew the game open with a four-run top of the fourth inning to go up 9-2.  Cierra James and Caitlyn Brooks each had RBI doubles during the fourth inning for Earlham.
  • Albertus added a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Rubino that scored Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.), who reached base with a one-out walk.
  • The Quakers ended the game after a five-run top of the sixth-inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Shelby Hill.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Arent struck out two batters in the bottom of the first for the Falcons as both teams remained scoreless through the first inning.
  • In the top of the second, Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) reached base on an error. Two batters later, Edwards doubled to left-center field, scoring Carangelo, making it a 1-0 Albertus lead. Boulli followed with an RBI single to make it a 2-0 game.
  • Thomas got on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.
  • Arent allowed just two hits over the next four innings and Edwards took care of the offense as she hit a two-run single to score Scwhippert and Rubino to make it a 4-1 game. Rubino, Scwhippert and Carrano all hit singles to load the bases for Edwards.
  • Thomas scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but Carangelo came in relief and struck out a batter, preserving the win for the Falcons.
