10/10: Softball Extends Winning Streak As Arent Notches 200th Career Strikeout

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team extended its winning streak to 10 games and Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) recorded her 200th career strikeout as the Falcons defeated Saint Joseph's College (Maine), 3-2 and 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Shea Softball Complex in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader.

Game one ended in dramatic fashion as Gabby Rubino (Southington, Conn.) threw out the potential tying run at third for the final out of the game. Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) pitched 6.2 innings, striking out six and giving up just two earned runs on eight hits.

At the plate, Arent was 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, a run and RBI in game one, while Mikaela Scwhippert (Whippany, N.J.), Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) and Amelia Boulli (Torrington, Conn.) each had two hits.

In game two, Arent pitched all seven innings, striking out six on six hits and no walks. Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) went 1-for-3 with a two-run double.

It is the longest winning streak in program history since the 2022 team won a program-record 24 straight games.

Albertus sits in first place in the GNAC South Division.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After both teams had a hit in the first inning and couldn't score, the Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Izzy Barreiro (Brookfield, Conn.). Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) drew a one-out walk, followed by a single by Boulli. Barreiro then singled to left field to score Edwards. The Falcons loaded the bases with one out, but a hard hit line drive by Smith was turned into a double play, ending the inning.
  • Jabs had three strikeouts over the first two innings.
  • Albertus scored one more run in the bottom of the third as the Falcons loaded the bases again before Boulli singled to left to score Arent, who hit a one-out double earlier in the inning.
  • In the top of the fourth, the Monks got a run back on an RBI double by Madison Pelletier to score Chantelle Bouchard, who led off the inning with a double.
  • In the botto of the sixth, Rubino led off the inning with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Jorja Trocchio (Wallingford, Conn.) at first. After a single from Smith advanced Trocchio to third, Gianna Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) hit what would prove to be an important sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Trocchio, making it a 3-2 game.
  • Charlotte Cloutier and Sadie Tirrell each singled for the Monks in the top of the seventh while Ema Signore came in relief with two outs in the inning. With runners on first and second Bouchard singled to left field. Cloutier came around to score, but Tirrell was thrown out trying to advance to third as Rubino made a perfect throw to Smith at third base for the final out.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Arent retired the side in order in the top of the first as all of the Monks outs came on an infield pop up.
  • After the Falcons had two infield pop ups of their own in the bottom of the first, Arent started a two-out rally with a walk. Scwhippert followed with a single and Carangelo hit a double that rolled all the way to the fence, scoring two runs, putting Albertus up, 2-0.
  • In the top of the second, Arent recorded her first strikeout of the game and her 200th of her career as she struck out Sylvia Foley for the first out in the inning. She'd go on to have two strikeouts in the inning.
  • SJC starting pitcher Miranda Northrup quieted the Albertus bats after the first inning, allowing just two base runners the rest of the way.
  • Arent had two more strikeouts in the third inning and allowed just four hits over the first six innings of the game.
  • The Monks didn't go quietly in the top of the seventh as Paige Connery singled with one out, followed by an error off a ball hit by Abbie Green-Sermak put runners on first and third. Charlotte Cloutier then hit a sacrifice fly to score Connery. After one more single by the Monks, Arent got Tirrell to fly out to centerfield to end the game.
