Smith Gets 100th Career Hit As Softball Splits With Kean And Husson

WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Albertus Magnus College softball team split two games on Wednesday. The Falcons defeated Kean, 4-3 before losing to Husson, 6-4.

Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) notched her 100th career hit in the game against Husson as she went 3-for-4 with a run in that game.

Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) was 4-for-8 with two doubles between the two games. Mikaela Schwippert (Whippany, N.J.) had a two-run double in the game against Husson.

Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) earned the win over Kean, throwing five innings with five strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons got out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the bottom of the first as Jabs was able to retire the final two batters. Kean then scored one run in both the bottom of the second and third innings as Brianna Sciulli and Rielynn Carey each had RBI singles, respectively.
  • Albertus broke through in the top of the fourth with three runs, as they loaded the bases with no outs after a double from Carangelo, a walk to Amelia Boulli (Torrington, Conn.) and a single by Amelia Ovalles (Lawrence, Mass.). Two batters later, Natalia Hernandez (Lorena, TX) put the Falcons on the board with an RBI single, and bases loaded walks from Smith and Gina Solow (Fairfield, Conn.) put the Falcons ahead, 3-2.
  • Jabs got out of another jam in the bottom of the fourth leaving runners on second and third. 
  • Albertus added another run in the top of the fifth as Izzy Barreiro (Brookfield, Conn.) drove in what would be an important insurance run as she doubled home Kaitlyn Scribner (Quaker Hill, Conn.) to put Albertus ahead, 4-2.
  • Madison Wilson (Belgrade, Me.) came on in relief in the bottom of the sixthand left runners on first and second. Kean added one more run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Morgan Boyd, but Wilson got the final batter to ground out to secure the save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Husson scored three in the first inning highlighted by a two-run double by Morgan Tainter. 
  • Tayler Watterson added her second RBI single of the game in the third inning to make it a 4-0 Husson lead. Tainter then added another RBI double in the fifth to put Husson up 5-0. The Eagles added one more run in the sixth.
  • Albertus made a big rally in the bottom of the seventh that fell just short as it scored four runs. After loading the bases with no outs, Schwippert hit a two-run double to make it a 6-2 game. Boulli and Carangelo then hit consecutive groundouts to make it a 6-4 game, but the Husson was able to get the final out and secure the win.
