Jabs Becomes Second Falcon to Reach 300 Strikeouts As Softball Splits Doubleheader With Dean

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team went 1-1 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader action today at home against the Dean College Bulldogs. The Falcons took game one by a final score of 5-0, and lost game two, 4-3. 

Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) got the start in game one, pitching six shutout innings, only surrendering two hits, while striking out seven Bulldog batters. She also became just the second pitcher in program history to reach 300 strikeouts. Jabs joins Candice Giordano as the only other Falcon pitcher to acheive 300 or more strikeouts. Giordano finished her career with 407 strikeouts.

Amelia Ovalles (Lawrence, Ma.) got the start in game two, pitching four scoreless innings, allowing two hits, a pair of walks, and seven strikeouts. 

Amelia Boulli (Torrington, Conn.) had three hits on the day, including a triple and a double. She also drove in a run and scored three times between both games. 

Mikaela Schwippert (Whippany, N.J.) drove in three runs on the heels of two triples. She also scored twice in the doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • In the bottom of the first inning with Boulli on second after a one out double, Reilly Austin (Cumberland, R.I.) grounded a slow roller back to the pitcher that was thrown away, allowing Boulli to score the opening run.
  • Jabs struck out the side in the top of the third. She struck out Emily Yazzetti to end the inning, which was the 300th career strikeout for Jabs.
  • Schwippert tripled to lead off the fourth, and scored after an error by Dean after a ground ball from Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.)
  • The Falcons added another run in the inning after a double by Ovalles brought home Carangelo.
  • The Falcons added two more runs in the fifth as Boulli tripled down the right field line to score Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.). Boulli then came across the plate as Schwippert grounded out to short.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus exploded for three runs in the third inning. After Gina Solow (Fairfield, Conn.) and Boulli singled, Schwippert sent a 2-2 pitch into the right centerfield gap for a two-run triple. Schwippert later scored as Carangelo grounded out to second. 
  • The Bulldogs got on the board in the fifth inning as a single by Leah Chamberlain brought home Kilpatrick. Nina Ostafin grounded out to second to then bring home Ramos. Liana Silva followed that up with a base hit to right to bring home Chamberlain to tie the game 3-3. 
  • Dean took a 4-3 lead as Ramos singled to center to bring home Maddy Barrette for the eventual game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning.
