Softball Splits With Farmingdale State

NEW HAVEN, Conn.  - The Albertus Magnus College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Farmingdale State. The Falcons won game one, 8-3, before falling in game two, 13-7.

Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) was 4-for-7 in the two games, including a triple, double while scoring three runs and driving in three. Reilly Austin (Cumberland, R.I.) scored three runs and drove in three during the two games.

Amelia Ovalles (Lawrence, Mass.) homered in game in game two and Izzy Barreiro (Brookfield, Conn.) drove in three runs on the day.

Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) earned the win in game one, striking out two in four innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Jabs retired the side in order in the top of the first, the Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the inning as Carangelo and Ovalles hit back-to-back triples with two outs to make it a 3-0 game.
  • The Rams responded with three runs in the top of the second as Madison DeMaio and Madison Sturtz each had RBI singles.
  • Albertus regained the lead in the bottom of the third with two runs as the Falcons once against delivered with two outs as Barreiro sent a double to deep right field to make it a 5-3 game to score Mikaela Schwippert (Whippany, N.J.) and Ovalles.
  • Austin help put the Falcons away with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth as part of a three-run inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams exchanged a pair of runs in the second inning as the Rams scored two in the top of the inning, courtesy of two bunts. In the bottom of the inning, after a walk to Austin, Carangelo ripped a double to centerfield to put the Falcons on the board. Two batters later, Barreiro hit an RBI single to make it a 2-2 game.
  • FSC regained the lead in the top of the third on a two-run single by Isabella Marchini.
  • Ovalles, who was also the starting pitcher in game two, helped her own cause in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run homer that scored Austin and Carangelo, who hit back-to-back singles earlier in the inning.
  • The Rams erupted for nine runs in the top of the fifth. Lopez, Ashley Toro and Natalie McMichael each had RBI singles to put the Rams up, 7-5. After two bases loaded walks to score two more runs, Bailey Hammock hit a bases clearing triple to put the Rams ahead, 12-5.
  • With the Falcons down 13-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Amelia Boulli (Torrington, Conn.) hit an RBI double and Austin registered a sacrifice fly for the final two runs of the game.
