Jabs Pitches Shutout As Softball Splits With USJ

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday, winning game one, 2-0 before losing game two, 6-0.

Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) pitched a seven inning complete game, striking out eight batters in game one. Reilly Austin (Cumberland, R.I.) drove in a run for the Falcons while Mikaela Schwippert (Whippany, N.J.) went 3-for-3 in the first game.

Izzy Barreiro (Brookfield, Conn.) had the lone hit for Albertus in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) and Amelia Boulli (Torrington, Conn.) each singled in the first to put runners on first and second with no outs. An error in the infield from USJ off the bat of Austin plated the first run of the game to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. 
  • Jabs allowed just one runner over the first three innings, striking out two batters during that span.
  • Austin drove in a run in the top of the fifth for the Falcons on an RBI single to score Smith, who walked earlier in the inning.
  • Jabs struck out the side in the sixth with a walk sandwiched in between. Jabs allowed just one runner to reach third base.

  • The Blue Jays scored three runs in the bottom of the first, which included a sacrifice fly from Lorynes Suriel and an RBI single from Kayla Phelps.
  • USJ added a run in both the third and fourth innings on another RBI single by Phelps and an RBI double by Jennifer Antonowicz, respectively.
  • Barreiro had the lone hit for the Falcons as she singled in the fifth inning.
  • USJ added one more run in the sixth.
