NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team used an eight-run fourth inning and Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) pitched a complete game as the Falcons defeated the Lasell University Lasers, 9-1 in five innings in the first day of Pod B play of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships on Wednesday at the Shea Softball Complex.
Jabs threw five innings, striking out three and allowing just one earned run on on four hits without allowing a walk.
Amelia Boulli (Torrington, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) and Amelia Ovalles (Lawrence, Mass.) were both 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Gabby Rubino (Southington, Conn.) was 1-for-3 with a run adnd an RBI.
Izzy Barreiro (Brookfield, Conn.) was 1-for-2 with a run, while Gianna Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) scored two runs and drove in one. Mikaela Schwippert (Whippany, N.J.) had a run and an RBI while drawing two walks.
Albertus as the top seed in the GNAC south division will host the remainder of Pod B and will take on the third seed in the north division, Rivier on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Lasell, seeded fourth in the GNAC south will take on the second seed in the GNAC north, Saint Joseph's College of Maine in an elimination game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
A third game at 4 p.m. will pit the loser of Albertus-Rivier and winner of Lasell-SJC in an elimination game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lasell got on the board in the top of the first as Adreanna Ventullo hit an RBI double to score Alyssa Bland. From there, Jabs allowed just two more baserunners for the rest of the game.
- Albertus left four runners on base over the first three innings but broke through with an eight-run fourth inning. The first 11 batters reached base via five singles and six walks. With the bases loaded and no one out, Rubino put the Falcons on the board with an RBI single to tie the game and Carrano and Schwippert each drew bases loaded walks to put the Falcons ahead, 3-1. Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) followed with an RBI single and Boulli followed with a two-run single to make it a 6-1 game. After a walk to Reilly Austin (Cumberland, R.I.) to load the bases again, Carangelo hit an RBI single to make it a 7-1 game before Ovalles walked to plate another run.
- The Lasers got out of the bottom of the fourth inning after turning a triple play as after a line drive to first by Barreiro. Lasell tagged first base to get the runner on first and threw to second to get the final out.
- In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Falcons finished off the game via the mercy rule as Austin drew a bases loaded walk to score Carrano after the Falcons loaded the bases with two outs.
