NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Ariellys Velez (Watertown, Conn.) of the Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team was named both Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie and Player of the Week. This is Velez's third week in a row earning Rookie of the Week. Ava Johnson (North Haven, Conn.) was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll.
In a 2-0 week for the Falcons, Velez averaged 28.5 points, shooting 57.5 percent from the field, 50 percent from three, and four steals per game. In an 87-65 win over Dean, the freshman guard scored 33 points with four assists and three steals. She followed that up with 24 points while collecting four rebounds and five steals in the team's 72-69 win over Colby Sawyer in the team's regular season finale on Saturday.
Johnson averaged a double-double with 13.5 points per game and 12 rebounds per game as well as posting a double-double in both games. The sophomore shot an impressive 63.2 percent from the field during the Falcons two games.
The Falcons head to Regis on Wednesday evening for the GNAC Quarterfinals at 6 p.m.
