Trocchio Notches First Win Of Career As Women's Ice Hockey Beats Neumann

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — First-year goaltender Jess Trocchio (Holtsville, N.Y.) stood tall in the net for the Albertus Magnus College women's ice hockey team and notched her first career win, 5-2, over the visiting Neumann University Knights on Tuesday.

Trocchio denied 14 while classmate Geena Montano (Wallingford, Conn.) netted her first goal for the Falcons and the eventual game-winner.

Aliyah Sawyer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Briony Retasket (Beaverton, Ore.) each scored their first goal of the season and both added an assist. Maddy Gootjes (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) and graduate student Jodi Ostroski (Roseau, Minn.) tallied their first helper this season.

THE BASICS

FINAL: Albertus Magnus 5 | Neumann 2

BOX

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons struck first after Ostroski recovered the puck during a battle for the puck just behind the net and quickly passed it to Retasket who tipped it in from the right side of the net at 6:25 in the first period. Sawyer was an integral part of the battle along the boards and didn't allow Neumann to take possession of the puck and was credited with an assist.
  • Just 82 seconds later, Tori Walsh (Marystown, Newfoundland) intercepted a pass by the Knights in the neutral zone before driving to the net for Albertus' second goal of the period. Walsh's first attempt on goal was deflected but the sophomore easily recovered the puck amongst traffic and skated around the net for the chip shot from the right side for her fifth goal of the season.
  • The hosts maintained a 2-0 lead through the first period until Charlotte Labre cut the deficit to one at 3:18 in the second period off the pass from Trish Dan on the power-play.
  • Montano gave the Falcons the two-goal lead again at the 12:10 mark after Gabriella Dellacroce's (Woodbridge, Conn.) attempted shot on goal. Dellacroce launched a shot near the blueline but Neumann goaltender Noelle Woodard made the save and Isabella Fedele (Buffalo, N.Y.) deflected the puck back to Montano who scored to make it a 3-1 game.
  • Lian Sydorowicz kept the Knights in the game with their second power-play goal with a score at 15:48 in the second as the visitors cut the Falcons' lead, 3-2.
  • In the third period, Shoshana Lofstock (Fair Lawn, N.J.) scored her second goal of the season as she navigated through Neumann defenders in front of the cage. Kayla Clark (Avon, Conn.), also in the mix in front of the net, helped Lofstock tack on another goal after Gootjes sent the puck to Clark from the visitors bench to make it a 4-2 game 9:51 into the period.
  • Retasket was heavily guarded by two Knights, but the sophomore was able to sneak the puck past the defenders to Sawyer in the scoring zone who squeaked the puck just past Woodard for the final tally of the game.
