Sonsini Scores Four Goals; Two Players Net Hat Tricks As Women's Lacrosse Defeats Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. -  The Albertus Magnus College women's lacrosse team defeated the Mariners of Mitchell College, 12-9, in its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory of the season on Saturday afternoon after scoring five goals in the final quarter.

Sage Sonsini (Milford, Conn.) led the Falcons with four goals on the day, while Tiffanie Ly (Branford, Conn.) and Jamily Carter (New Britain, Conn.) each netted a hat trick. Delaney Schlechtweg (Goshen, N.Y.) added two goals for the Falcons, as well as four assists on the day.

Victoria McDermott (Northford, Conn.) stopped 12 of 21 shots in net.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons got the scoring started at the 9:52 mark of the first quarter when Sonsini added the first of her four goals of the game.
  • Mitchell took the lead with a goal from Halie Jennings and two from Chloe Jennings, including one on a man-up opportunity.
  • In the second quarter, Sansoni added another goal on a man-up opportunity, taking a pass from Schlechtweg. Carter then tied the game for the Falcons at 3-3, adding the first of her three goals, off a pass from Schlechtweg. 
  • Ly added her first goal of the game at the 5:48 mark of the second quarter, putting the Falcons ahead 4-3. Schlechtweg gave the Falcons a 5-3 lead at the 2:10 mark after taking a pass from Julianna Montano (Wallingford, Conn.).
  • Ly extended the Falcon lead to three at the 12:45 mark of the third period, adding her second goal of the game. Jennings put the Mariners within two, followed by Lauren Cordero making it a one goal game for Mitchell. Jennings then added a man-up goal to tie the game at 6-6. The Mariners took the lead once again at the 2:56 mark of the third period courtesy of two more goals from Cordero, putting the game at 8-6. 
  • Sonsini put the Falcons back within one with just 35 seconds left in the third period
  • Jennings added another goal for the Mariners to give Mitchell a two goal lead once again to start the fourth quarter, but Ly and Carter each scored a goal just 34 seconds apart to the game at 9-9 with 10:45 left in the fouth. Sonsini then gave the Falcons the lead for good with 9:36 remaining off a pass from Schlectweg.  Schlechtweg, and Carter each added one more goal apiece in the fourth quarter to give the Falcons the insurance goals to secure the win.
