HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus took a 6-1 lead to start the first set, which included aces by Savanna Smith (New Haven, Conn.) and Da'Veona Parker (New Haven, Conn.) and kills from  Cseszko and Pelaez. The Hawks, however, went on a 10-2 run to take an 11-8 lead, taking advantage of seven errors from the Falcons. Ayanna Hubbard (West Haven, Conn.) had two kills later in the set for the Falcons, but UHart maintained the three-point lead at 14-11. The Falcons got it to 16-15 after another kill from Pelaez, but the Hawks finished on a 9-2 run to take the set. Cseszko, Pelaez, Hubbard and Paula Matheus (Tunja-Boyaca, Colombia) each had two kills in the set.
  • The Hawks scored the first six points of the second set, including two aces by Kylee Connally and eventually took a 10-3 lead. Albertus followed with a 9-5 run behind a kill and ace from Pelaez, and kills from Matheus, Gordon and Cseszko. Albertus got the deficit back down to three points one more time after back-to-back aces from Jayden Haddaway (Easton, MD), but a 7-2 run from the Hawks gave them a 2-0 lead in the match. Pelaez and Cseszko each had three kills in the set.
  • The third set saw eight ties and six lead changes over the course of the first 19 points as Gordon had three kills during that stretch. A kill from Jordan Murphy of UHart gave the Hawks a 10-9 lead, one which they would never give up the rest of the way as they led by as much as nine points in the final set.
