Volleyball Loses Both Ends Of GNAC Doubleheader To Colby-Sawyer, Regis

WESTON, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College volleyball team lost both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match, falling to Colby-Sawyer, 3-1 before losing to host, Regis, 3-0.

Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 33 assists, 14 digs and two aces against Colby-Sawyer and added 16 assists and three aces against Regis. Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) had 15 kills against Colby-Sawyer.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus took its first lead of the opening set at 9-8 as Nathalie Wallace (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had two kills early on and one from both Pealez and Joismar Aviles (Hatillo, Puerto Rico). The teams tied three more times in the set, the last at 12-12 on a kill from Paula Matheus (Tunja-Boyaca, Colombia). However, the Chargers scored the next five points that included two kills from Katie Mollberg to take a 17-12 lead. Albertus got to within three one more time, but Colby-Sawyer finished on an 8-2 run to take the set. Pelaez had three kills while Matheus, Aviles and Wallace each had two.
  • The Falcons never trailed in the second set, scoring the first three points that opened with an ace from Gordon. Albertus opened up a 14-8 lead in the set, taking advantage of six errors over an eight-point stretch from the Chargers. Pelaez finished off the set with four kills over the team's last eight points as Albertus tied the match at 1-1. Pelaez had five kills and Gordon notched eight assists in the set. 
  • The Chargers took full control of the third set, juming out to a 15-4 lead and were never threatened. Mollberg had six kills and Brooke Patnode had 11 assists and two aces for Colby-Sawyer.
  • The final set saw 10 ties and six lead changes. The Falcons took their biggest lead at 8-5 as Pelaez had three kills and Nyanna Richards (Bridgeport, Conn.), two over the first 13 points. Albertus took its final lead of the set at 13-12 after a kill from Yarelis Torres (East Haven, Conn.), but an 8-2 run gave Colby-Sawyer the 20-15 lead. Albertus cut the deficit to 22-20, but the Chargers closed out the match on a kill from Katie Mollberg.

NOTEWORTHY

It was the fifth match Gordon has had both double-digit assists and digs in a match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons fell behind 8-2 early on after holding an early 2-1 lead. Albertus got as close as four points twice during the set, the last time at 13-9, but the Pride pulled away in the second half of the set. Richards had three kills and Gordon had six assists of the team's nine kills in the set.
  • Regis led the entirety of the second set, taking advantage of ten attack errors from the Falcons. Albertus had five different players each notch a kill in the set. Avery Mola had three kills for Regis in the set.
  • Albertus rallied from an early 12-6 deficit in the third set to take a 15-14 lead thanks to three consecutive aces from Gordon. After Regis took the lead back at 19-18, two straight aces from Alexys Signor (North Haven, Conn.) put Albertus back up, 20-19. However, four straight points that indluded two kills from Lily DiRico put the Pride back up for good at 23-20. Pelaez had one more kill for Albertus before Regis closed out the match.
