Volleyball Wins Second Straight, Topping Elms In Four Sets

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophie Cseszko (Grapevine, TX) had a team-high 10 kills and five blocks as the Albertus Magnus College volleyball team defeated Elms College, 3-1 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Wednesday evening in The Nest.

It was the second straight win for the Falcons. Alexys Signor (North Haven, Conn.) had a team-high 15 digs and Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) had a team-high 17 assists and four aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set saw the Falcons go down 14-6 before scoring 10 straight points to take a 16-14 lead. During the pivotal run, Gordon had three aces and Cseszko had three kills. Elms then took a 22-20 lead, but the Falcons battled back, taking advantage of three errors from the Blazers and two kills from Cseszko to closeout the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • With the teams tied 7-7 in set two, the Falcons scored the next three points which included another kill by Cseszko and an ace by Paula Matheus (Boyaca, Colombia) to take a three-point lead. TAlbertus would lead by as much as five at 22-17, but the Blazers scored thenext five points to tie the set thanks to kills by Alysha Izquierdo and Lilliana Simmons. The Falcons, however, finished out the set scoring the final three points, the last on a kill from Jazmine Taboas Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Elms took a 5-1 lead in set three and the Falcons battled back to tie the game three more times and eventually took a brief 15-14 lead after an ace by Alondra Acosta (Guayama, Puerto Rico). The lead would be brief as Elms scored the next four points and finished the set on an 11-3 run to make it a 2-1 match.
  • The Falcons never trailed in the fouth set, jumping out to a 13-5 lead before Elms took a timeout. During the opening run, Nyanna Richards (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) each had two kills during the opening run. The Blazers never got any closer than seven points the rest of the way as Richards, Pelaez, Negron, Gordon and Matheus all had kills in the second half of the final set.

  • As a team, the Falcons had a season-high 77 digs.
  • It was the fourth match this season the team had double-digit aces.
  • The Falcons had 41 kills on the evening. It was the fifth time this season the team has eclipsed 40 kills.
