Volleyball Swept By NEC, SJC

HENNIKER, N.H. - The Albertus Magnus College volleyball team lost a pair of 3-0 matches to Saint Joseph's College (SJC) of Maine and New England College (NEC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) had 11 kills against SJC in the first match. Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 30 assists between the two matches, including 18 against SJC. Sophie Cseszko (Grapevine, TX) had 15 kills on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus scored the first point in the first set, but it would be the only time the Falcons would hold the lead as the Monks jumped out to a 14-6 lead. The Falcons fought back to get within six points after a kill from Pelaez made it a 19-13 set, but it would be the closest they would get the rest of the way as the Monks took a 1-0 lead in the match. Pelaez had three kills in the set.
  • Albertus took a 4-3 lead in set two after scoring three straight points capped by an ace by Yarieshka Sierra (Hartford, Conn.). It was the lone lead for the Falcons as the Monks took the lead for good 10 points later after a kill from Victoria Briones made it a 9-8 game. The Monks went on to take the second set, 25-18. Pelaez had four kills in the set and Gordon had eight assists.
  • The two teams were unable to separate themselves through in the third set early on as the two teams were tied 10 times to go with two lead changes over the first 26 points. Albertus did hold an early 5-3 lead after kills by Cseszko and Pelaez early on. With the match tied, 13-13, the Monks scored the next seven points to take a commanding 20-13 lead. Albertus did not get any closer than five points the rest of the way as the Monks closed out the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus scorfed the first two points of the first set, including one on a kill by Pelaez. The Pilgrims scored the next four points to take the lead for good. The Falcons trailed by as much as eight in the first set at 20-12 but managed to get the deficit down to 24-20 that included two kills from Sierra and one each by Cseszko and Nyanna Richards (Bridgeport, Conn.). However a kill from NEC's Kaylee Montgomery gave the Pilgrims the 1-0 match lead. Richards had three kills in the set, while Sierra, Cseszko and Pelaez each had two.
  • Emma Fallon (Harwinton, Conn.) opened up the second set with a kills, but it was the lone lead for the Falcons as the Pilgrims took a 12-4 lead that included two aces by Lily-Anne Heywood and one by Alexandria Seijas-Quea. Albertus never got closer than seven points the rest of the way as the Pilgrims took a 2-0 lead in the match. Cseszko had four more kills in the set. 
  • Albertus never led in the third set as NEC opened up a 12-5 lead. The Falcons got no closer than five points the rest of the way. Sierra and Cseszko each had two kills in the set. Seven different players had kills for NEC in the set.
