How Sweep It Is: Volleyball Shuts Out Maritime (N.Y.) and Medgar Evers In Tri-Match

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College volleyball team swept both of its matches on Saturday afternoon against SUNY Maritime (N.Y.) and Medgar Evers College in The Nest during Homecoming and Family Weekend on the Albertus campus.

Jazmine Taboas Negron had 10 kills over the course of the two matches, including a team-high six against Maritime. Isabella Leatherman (Las Vegas, Nev.) had a career-high 8 aces against Medgar Evers. Paula Matheus (Boyaca, Colombia) had 11 Kills and six aces over the two matches. Yarieshka Sierra (Hartford, Conn.) had five aces against Medgar Evers.

The Falcons had 35 aces on the day, including a season-high 27 against Medgar Evers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus opened up a 7-2 lead against Martime behind two aces by Matheus and a kill from Negron. The Falcons opened up a 21-14 lead after scoring five straight points, which included kills by Emma Fallon (Harwinton, Conn.) and Cseszko. Albertus added one more kill by Nyanna Richards (Bridgeport, Conn.) as the Falcons took a 1-0 lead.
  • Maritime scored the first four points of the second set, including two aces by Addison Weist. The Privateers didn't allow the Falcons to take their first lead until an ace by Matheus made it 17-16. Cseszko and Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) had kills down the stretch and Negron ended the set on a ferocious kill of her own to give the set to Albertus and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • In set three, Maritime scored the first three points, but Albertus responded quickly with the next five as Sierra had two aces and a kill along with another kill from Matheus to take a 5-3 lead. Albertus extended its lead to 114 after two more aces by Matheus. Later in the set a kill by Weist and an ace by Olivia Casabona followed by three Albertus errors tied the set at 14-14. The Privateers would briefly go on to hold a 16-15 lead, but the Falcons were able to go back ahead 23-18 after an ace by Alyssa Valentine (Bristol, Conn.) and kills from Matheus and Negron. Maritime crept back to within one at 24-23, but a service error ended the match to give Albertus the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus jumped out to a 7-2 lead in set one as Sierra had five consecutive aces early on. As a team, the Falcons had 12 aces in the first set as Alexys Signor (North Haven, Conn.) had three of her one and Valentine, Alyna Ovalles (Oakdale, Conn.) and Gordon each had one as Albertus cruised to the set one win.
  • The Falcons trailed 4-3 early in set two, but a kill from Cseszko and an ace by Jayden Haddaway (Easton, MD.) vaulted the Falcons ahead, 9-4. Savanna Smith (New Haven, Conn.) added a kill later on, followed by two more aces by Ovalles to make it a 13-5 set. The Falcons were never threated as Leatherman closed out the set with five straight aces to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The two teams were tied five times during the early part of the third set, including at 10-10. From there, the Falcons rattled off seven straight points, including three more aces by Leatherman and kills from Matheus, Smith and Alondra Acosta (Guayama, Puerto Rico) to make it  17-14. The Cougars crept back to within three at 18-15, but the Falcons scored the final seven points, which included an ace by Matheus and kills by Camila Queiroz (West Haven, Conn.) and Ayanna Hubbard (West Haven, Conn.).
