Volleyball Swept By Regis, Colby-Sawyer In GNAC Finale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College volleyball team lost its final two Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games of the season, getting swept by both Regis College and Colby-Sawyer College (CSC), 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at The Nest.

Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) had 17 combined kills, including 12 against CSC. Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) led all Falcons in assists with 15 combined. Paula Matheus (Boyaca, Colombia) had five aces and six kills agaisnt CSC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first set, Regis jumped out to a 7-3 lead early on before the Falcons rallied to cut the deficit to 10-9. During the run, Yarieshka Sierra (Hartford, Conn.) had two kills and Pelaez and Matheus each had one. Regis then went on a 7-1 run of its own, taking a 17-10 lead as Grace Fabiano had two kills in the run. Albertus got as close as five points once more, but Regis pulled away to take the set one win.
  • The two teams split the first ten points of set two as Pelaez, Emma Fallon (Harwinton, Conn.) and Jazmine Taboas Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had kills early on. From there, the Pride took over going on a 14-3 run to take a commanding 19-8 lead as Regis had four aces during the run. Albertus did not get any closer than nine points the rest of the way as Regis took a two-set lead.
  • After dropping the first two points in the final set, back-to-back kills from Gordon and Fallon tied it at 2-2. Regis scored the next three, including an ace by Bella Karpicz. The Falcons got back to within one point two more times, the last coming at 6-5 before a 10-2 run by Regis made it a 16-7 set. The Falcons got to within 17-11 after two straight aces by Pelaez, but could not get any closer as Regis took the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After trailing 10-8 in the first set, the Falcons rallied with a 7-1 run that included two kills from Pelaez, one kill from Fallon and an ace and a kill from Gordon to make it a 15-11 game. An ace from Savanna Smith (New Haven, Conn.) made it an 18-15 lead for the Falcons, but the Chargers scored four straight, including an ace from Kamryn Brakemeier to put CSC up 19-18. The Falcons scored four of the next five points which saw kills from Cseszko and Pelaez and an ace from Da'Veona Parker (New Haven, Conn.) to give Albertus the 22-20 edge. Albertus had set point after a service error by CSC, but a kill from Brakemeier and two attack errors by the Falcons gave CSC the first set win.
  • The Falcons tied set two up three times before the Chargers were able to take a 14-9 lead after an ace by Bree Bacon. The Chargers would go on to take a 22-14 lead, but Albertus scored eight of the next nine points, including four kills by Pelaez to close the gap to 23-22. The two teams swapped the next two points, but a kill by Brakemeier gave the Chargers the set.
  • Albertus jumped out to an 8-4 lead in set three behind two aces by both Matheus and Pealez. The Falcons led 10-7 before CSC went on a 9-1 run to take a 16-11 lead behind three aces. The Falcons got back to within two points two more times, but eventually CSC would close the match out with a kill and an ace by Brakemeier.

Fallon now has 197 kills and is just three shy of 200 in her career.

Gordon cracked the 1,600 assist mark in the match against Regis.
