Volleyball Closes Out Season With Win Over Lehman; Pelaez Notches 1,000th Career Point

BRONX, N.Y. - The Albertus Magnus College volleyball team finished its regular season with a 3-0 sweep of Lehman College on Thursday evening in non-conference action.

The Falcons finished their season 15-15. The 15 wins are the second most in a season in program history. Albertus won 16 in 2017.

Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) earned her 1,000th career point in her career, finishing with nine kills, and six digs to go with an ace. Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) had nine assists. Pelaez became the first player in program history to acheive the feat.

Savanna Smith (New Haven, Conn.) finished with a team-high 10 assists and three aces. Nyanna Richards (Bridgeport, Conn.) had eight kills and three aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set saw 11 ties and nine lead changes as the Falcons scored a season-high in a set with 29 points. Pelaez and Sophie Cseszko (Grapevine, TX) each had three kills in the set, while Yarieshka Sierra (Hartford, Conn.), Paula Matheus (Boyaca, Colombia) and Richards each had two. Late in the set, the Falcons had set point, making it a 24-20 score after a kill from Cseszko. Lehman rallied to score the next four points before Pelaez gave the Falcons set point again with a kill. Lehman once again staved off set point and did it a third time after Matheus had a kill to give the Falcons another chance to win the set. Lehman then had set point, taking a 27-26 lead, but the Falcons scored the final three points, including two more kills by Pelaez to take the set and a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • Albertus never trailed in the second set, turning a 3-3 tie to a 14-5 lead, led by aces from Pelaez and Alexys Signor (Bristol, Conn.), while seven different players had kills during the run. Albertus led by as much as 11 points in the set and Lehman did not get any closer than seven points the rest of the way. Pelaez had four more kills in the set, including her 1,000th point, while Naomi Batalla (New Haven, Conn.) had four assists in the set.
  • The Falcons scored the first five points of the third set, including three straight aces by Smith and two kills by Richards. Richards added three aces later in the set to make it a 14-3 set. Lehman briefly cut its deficit back to single digits at 14-5, but the Falcons scored the next four points, including two aces by Jayden Haddaway (Easton, MD). The Falcons closed out the set and the match with a kill from Richards. Albertus finished with eight aces in the set.
